so my friend ben went to portugal for a week. i know, i’m jealous too. i would love a european vacation right about now. so he ran into some problems concerning where he was gonna leave his dog, max, while he was gone. he had someone lined up to keep her most of the week, but that fell through. so he calls me and asks if we can do it, and i tell him sure we can. well, i didn’t exactly consult with my wife before i committed ourselves to this little responsibility. she wasn’t entirely pleased that we were keeping max for so long, but i was eventually able to get her to see how this was the right thing to do and how it will be good for us as well because now whenever WE need someone to watch ladybug, i can call ben. anyways.
we originally had plans to go and visit my father in nags head, nc for the weekend, but with the weather turning crappy and some other things kind of in the way we decided to postpone that trip. ben knew this and had made reservations at the holiday barn for max for the weekend while we would be away. i saved him some money by not having to take max while were away, since we ended up not leaving. aren’t i a great friend and petsitter?
so let’s back up, ben and his girlfriend bring max over to the house last monday, oct. 13th. their flight left that afternoon and i had to be in class at 1. let me tell you a little bit about max. max is a girl, first of all. she is a 3 year old french bulldog. cute as can be. i love little dogs like that in the bulldog family. we used to have a boston terrier growing up, which are similar in size and look to the french bulldog.

here’s the other thing about max: she has that “submissive peeing” thing goin’ on. that means whenver she gets excited to see you she will squirt wherever she’s at. awesome. i knew this going into the experience and figured out the best way to keep her from pissin’ all over the house. we set her crate up in the kitchen right by the back door and established that we would let max out of the crate and out of the house before really talking to her. wanted her to get a chance to empty her bladder before we really spoke and acted glad to see her. this plan worked out pretty well. we were able to keep the in the house urinations to a minimum and were proud of our efforts.
so remember when i said my wife wasn’t too happy about max coming to visit? well that quickly changed as she fell in love with the little stinker. max is little, and max is very cute. she is pretty wild, but little dogs can be a bit more wild and get away with it. if bug was as insane as max is it would be way too much to manage. so my wife, shannon (not sure if i’ve told you her name yet) really enjoyed having max around. she (my wife) is so funny about giving dog’s nicknames that are people names. so max’s name for the week became lucy. and let me tell you, lucy is a trip. she and ladybug get along pretty well and had a good time playing. ladybug is good at playing with little dogs. she knows she can kick their ass and often rolls onto her back to make the fight fair.
bug wasn’t so happy about max being around once they were inside though. for one, max, excuse me, lucy was taking away from bug’s attention from us. she was good at doing it too because she was always in your face. she is allowed on the couches at “home” and thought it was cool at my house too. she would hop up there at least 15 times a day, but would usually hop right back down as we don’t get down like that. two, lucy thought that all the toys and chews were hers. my dog basically had to give up all rights to her own stuff for a whole week because lucy is a little psycho and will make sure she is the one with the desired chew or toy in her possession. thirdly, i’m sure there’s a third somewhere, but basically after a couple days ladybug looked like she was ready for lucy to go.
but then they’d play together outside and inside and i think deep down bug liked havin’ some company and someone to play with.

i’m gonna tell one more story about max being at our house and then i gotta go.
my wife would love to dress ladybug up if she could. it’s not that she can’t, but she knows i think it’s ridiculous, she knows bug doesn’t really like it, and most of the time there aren’t cool clothes that will even fit her ’cause she’s not a small dog. but lucy, lucy is small enough and cute enough and my wife could not resist. while out and about she came across halloween costumes for dogs. i think she was at target. she called and asked if she could buy one for lucy. haha, i laughed and said of course and she told me the choices. one of the choices was a bumblebee and that one sounded perfect for lucy. brought it home and put it on the dog and wouldn’t you know it, lucy didn’t mind at all. i wasn’t sure if ben and his girlfriend dressed max up or not, i had never seen her wear clothes before. i was sure that they did when she got into the costume with little resistance and then just acted like everything was normal while wearing it.

all i can say is hilarious. the pictures don’t even really do it justice. her little black self inside this black and yellow bee costume was the funniest thing i had seen all week.
ben came and picked max up this tuesday evening when they got back from their trip. he said they had a wonderful time, as i would imagine. we were a little sad to see max go as we had gotten used to having her around the house. small dogs are fun because you can hold ‘em in your lap, pick ‘em up and carry ‘em around, ya know.
bug didn’t seem too upset, however. she was glad to have her house, and life, back to normal.
